A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
